Kate McGarry’s Less is More Trio is a cosmic collaboration between vocalist McGarry, guitarist Keith Ganz and world-renowned percussionist Clarence Penn, born of her recent Grammy-nominated recording “If Less is More…Nothing is Everything.” With a palette that includes Zen-like minimalism, joyous swing and world rhythms, climactic opuses, electronic explorations, and bare bones storytelling, McGarry and the Trio have electrified and inspired audiences all over the world. Kate McGarry is a veteran jazz performing and recording artist with 5 CDs to her credit. Her music collaborations include projects with such figures Clark Terry, Hank Jones, Chick Corea, Bobby McFerrin and Maria Schneider and she has performed at many of jazz’ venerated clubs and festivals. A talented songriter and arranger, she has also written, recorded, and produced 63 children’s songs for the Heinle Picture Dictionary for Children and has an appointment to the faculty of the Manhattan school of Music. Keith Ganz, guitarist /composer/arranger and Kate’s husband can be heard regularly at New York’s top jazz clubs and has performed in jazz festivals the world over with such figures as Fred Hersch, Luciana Souza, Billy Drummond, Steve Cardenas, Ben Monder, Theo Bleckman, Peter Eldridge, Gretchen Parlato and numerous others. Clarence Penn, drummer, has toured, performed and recorded with a veritable who’s who of jazz stars including Betty Carter, Ellis Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Jacky Terrasson, Roberta Flack, Dizzy Gillespie, Dianne Reeves, Cyrus Chestnut, Mike Stern and Rachel Z. He is a NEA grant recipient and his first titled album as leader, Penn’s Landing, was chosen by New York Times jazz critics as one of the best records of the year(1997). 8 PM Friday, March 5, 2010
