| Nov. 20, 2009: Anat Cohen Quartet |
|
Israeli tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Anat Cohen is one of the primary jazz voices of her generation, equally conversant in traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango, and Afro-Cuban styles. She has four recordings as a leader of the Anzic Label and her music has broad audience appeal. Performing with Anat are Jason Lindner, piano; Joe Martin, bass; and Daniel Freedman, drums. Anat played saxophone in the Israeli Air Force band before moving to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music where she immersed herself in the "world music" scene playing klezmer as well as Afro-Cuban music with Migua Zenon. She was introduced to choro musicby flutist Fernando Brandao and began playing in well known NYC Brazilian music ensembles. Anat also plays with her talented two brothers as the Three Cohens and plays the early jazz music of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet.
