May 7, 2009: Legends of Jazz Quintet

"Five truly legendary musicians who have played, toured and recorded with the biggest names in Jazz over the last fifty years, reunited from their days in San Francisco during the late 60s and 70s."

The Jazz Legends are a group that major jazz festivals hunger to offer. And here they are:

JULIAN PRIESTER (trombone) For many years a Blue Note Records recording artist. Julian has recorded and toured with Ray Charles, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Jon Hendricks, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland and Charlie Haden

HADLEY CALIMAN (tenor sax) Hadley has recorded and played with artists such as Freddie Hubbard, Gerald Wilson, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon, Joe Pass, Nancy Wilson, Hampton Hawes, Mongo Santamaria, Jon Hendricks, Elvin Jones, Earl Hines, Bobby Hutcherson, Bobby Bryant, Della Reese, and Carlos Santana. 

LARRY VUCKOVICH (piano)  Larry became Mel Torme's first call pianist in San Francisco and had a 25 year association with vocalist and lyricist John Hendricks of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. A regular in New York's Blue Note and Village Vanguard jazz clubs, Larry has made a dozen recordings as leader, several critically acclaimed, including his latest, "High Wall:Real Life Film Noir".

JOHN HEARD (bass) John is a mainstay in the world of jazz recording, performing on more than 150 albums such figures as Benny Carter, Rasaan Roland Kirk, Hampton Hawes, Oscar Peterson, George Duke, A; Jarreau, John Handy, Wes Montgomery, Cal Tjader, Gerald Wislon Big Band, Freddie Hubbard, Count Basie, and many more.

EDDIE MARSHALL (drums) A fixture in the Bay area jazz scene, Eddie is associated musically with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Stan Getz, Bobby McFerrin and Bobby Hutcherson and has played and recorded with nearly every major figure in jazz including Freddie Hubbard, Jon Hendricks, Kenny Burrell, Dexter Gordon, Archie Shepp, Dionne Warwick, Kronos Quartet, and many others.
