Lee & Susan Berk, founding board members/co-chairs
Lee and Susan began to visit Santa Fe in 1984 and have lived here full time since 2004. Lee is President Emeritus of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, known for its jazz and contemporary music curricula, where he devoted his professional career to expanding music education opportunity for talented music students from around the world. In Santa Fe, he supports the annual summer jazz festival and has served as Chairman of the New Mexico Music Commission, a board member of the arts charter high school New Mexico School for the Arts, and as a board member of SCORE, where retired executives counsel for profit businesses and non profit organizations. He is also a board member of the New Mexico Music Commission. As a President’s spouse, Susan was a continuous contributor to campus life, co-hosting events for students, faculty, staff, donors, and leading professional musicians. She has served as President of the New Mexico Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts and as a board member of the Museums of New Mexico Foundation and the Lensic Performing Arts Center as well as being on the Education Committee of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Dr. Larry Hootkin, Chair, Artist Selection Committee Jane Hootkin, Chair, Host CommitteeLarry and Jane began to visit Santa Fe in 1970 and have lived here full time since 2001. Larry is a retired gastroenterologist. His interest in jazz goes back to his teens. He played the piano in groups prior to his medical career. He has developed an extensive personal collection of jazz music and is well read on the history and development of jazz and individual musicians. He participates actively in a number of jazz bulletin boards on the internet and is on the steering committee for Friends Of Indian Art (MIAC). Jane has an equally long history of listening to jazz. She was the proprietor of a cooking school for many years and maintains an avid interest in nutrition as it affects health issues. She is a member of the Folk Art Committee of the Museum of International Folk Art and a mentor at Cesar Chavez Elementary School. John Greenspan and Julianne Bodner GreenspanJohn has had a long association with KSFR(101.1 FM) where he served as a board member 2001-2008(including a term as President) and where he currently hosts Good Morning, Jazz from 9 AM to noon on Wednesday and Thursday mornings weekly as well as a weekly radio broadcast, The Forum at 6:30 PM Mondays covering current issues. John had a professional career as an attorney with the Federal Communication Commission for 27 years before coming to Santa Fe in 2000, where he has also served as board member of the Santa Fe Symphony, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, and the Southwest Jazz Orchestra, He also currently serves on the board of the New Mexico Music Commission Foundation. Julianne moved to Santa Fe in 1999 and became the director of the Santa Fe office of Catholic Charities. She then was the clinical director at Su Vida, and is currently a psychotherapist at The Pastoral Counseling Center. Julianne grew up in South Bend, Indiana and received her undergraduate degree in Sociology from the College of Mount Saint Joseph in Cincinnati. After college she taught school in Chicago which inspired her to become a child and family therapist. She received her MSW from The University of Maryland. She served as director of Client Services at the Barker Foundation, an adoption agency in Washington DC. Julianne first listened to Jazz in early adolescence and was a fan of Dave Brubeck. Along with her spouse, John Greenspan, she attended numerous Jazz events in the Washington, D.C. area and here in Santa Fe. Julianne loves a good bass player (Paul Chambers) and digs Bill Evans. Julianne and John share her 3 children and 3 grandchildren and his 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Mike and Alina BoykoMike Boyko is a former professional drummer from New York. He studied music since age seven under legendary jazz drummer Howie Mann. He had a very successful career and played drums for several major label bands in genres as diverse as hard rock, pop/rock and hip-hop. He is the founder of TempoInMotion.com, a music system for sports tempo and rhythm training. He is also the president of B-now Enterprises, Inc, a company specialized in online marketing strategy, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mike has always had a love for jazz and music of all genres and looks forward to contributing to the growth of the Friends of Santa Fe Jazz. Drs. Valentin Jordanov and Vania JordanovaValentin and Vania are originally from Bulgaria, a country with rich cultural history and unique folk music. In 1990 they moved to the USA to pursue carriers in science and engineering. Both hold Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Valentin specializes in radiation measurements and has worked in the academia and the industry. Presently he is a president of his own consulting firm. Vania is a space physics scientist and was Associate Professor at the University of New Hampshire before joining the Space Science and Applications group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2006. Valentin and Vania love listening to all genres of music and have been supporting music students and their development as young musicians for more than 10 years. They have contributed to the organization of music performances in the Boston area and after moving to New Mexico in 2006 they have become active supporters of Friends of Santa Fe Jazz. Bruce AdamsBruce Adans is Publisher of the Santa Fean Magazine, Santa Fe’s voice for art, music and culture for the city of Santa Fe. He is also Publisher of Santa Fean Calendar, the most inclusive art and entertainment calendar site for the city of Santa Fe. This calendar is also made available to the City of Santa Fe’s CVB site. |
